![]() ![]() ![]() The element's name comes from a mischievous sprite of German miner mythology, Nickel (similar to Old Nick), who personified the fact that copper-nickel ores resisted refinement into copper. Nickel was first isolated and classified as an element in 1751 by Axel Fredrik Cronstedt, who initially mistook the ore for a copper mineral, in the cobalt mines of Los, Hälsingland, Sweden. Use of nickel (as natural meteoric nickel–iron alloy) has been traced as far back as 3500 BCE. An iron–nickel mixture is thought to compose Earth's outer and inner cores. Meteoric nickel is found in combination with iron, a reflection of the origin of those elements as major end products of supernova nucleosynthesis. Even so, pure native nickel is found in Earth's crust only in tiny amounts, usually in ultramafic rocks, and in the interiors of larger nickel–iron meteorites that were not exposed to oxygen when outside Earth's atmosphere. Pure nickel is chemically reactive but large pieces are slow to react with air under standard conditions because a passivation layer of nickel oxide forms on the surface that prevents further corrosion. Nickel is a hard and ductile transition metal. It is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a slight golden tinge. ![]() ![]() Nickel is a chemical element with symbol Ni and atomic number 28. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() The protagonist and the reader are equally trapped by this fine collaboration. We planned a final, five-issue storyline that would give the book a satisfying end while bringing back a host of familiar side characters we had introduced over the years. Red or green lettering on black ship monitors occasions some squinting. A quarter inch compression in front of the spine face makes the guttering essentially useless. Titan should have had second thoughts about the binding method, though. With glossy stock in and out, this 6.5”x10” book is of good quality. ![]() Some memorable elements from the original novel are not here. I found myself riveted enough to complete reading it in one sitting! As stated, this is an adaptation. There is a darkness and a starkness to this presentation. In this manner visual interest is maintained and pace is somewhat controlled.įoreground detail is sufficient to lock attention, while backgrounds (space, landscapes, cityscapes) border on impressionistic. A stack of panels the full width of a page will be followed with a page four panels across and four deep, then by a page of multiple scenes varying radically in size. The size of panels changes with the tempo and emphasis of the storyline. Illustrations run left to right, top to bottom, making an English reader comfortable simply with the accustomed ease of movement within the tale. It’s not the original novel, but it’s significant in and of itself. Here is an adaptation of the famous novel by Joe Haldeman. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sometimes I like when there aren’t big bad twists and cliffhangers. Anyway, I found this book quite nice, a classic thriller in which there is a mystery, an investigation and a resolution. I read this book in a day… I don’t know why I can read Christie’s book so quickly. The main characters here are Tommy and Tuppence Berefords, an old couple that in the past were spies or this is what I gathered by the book. This is a different reading for me, because I didn’t know that Agatha wrote books other that Poirot and Miss Marple series. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Today, medical associations differentiate between plastic surgery (which is reconstructive and corrects impairments like cleft palates or traumatic injuries) and cosmetic surgery (which is elective and includes procedures like breast augmentation, facelifts, and liposuction) it’s cosmetic surgery that Westerfeld takes issue with in Uglies. Though people have been repairing bodies for millennia, elective surgery wasn’t much of a possibility until the mid to late 19th century, thanks to the development of anesthesia and antibiotics. The earliest mention of what would be considered plastic surgery today appears in the Edwin Smith Papyrus, a medical text dating to between 30 B.C. The Uglies series was inspired by the increasing availability of plastic surgery (especially for young people), as well as the increase in surveillance that Westerfeld sees young people experiencing. ![]() ![]() ![]() The surviving document shows that someone - perhaps a tactful adult - erased a downstroke from the ‘R’, returning Elizabeth Stuart to her rank as ‘Elizabeth P’, or ‘Elizabeth Principessa’. ![]() ![]() At 13, grandeur got the better of her when she signed herself ‘Elizabeth R’, her most exact copy yet of the queen’s mark. Le Sommet, the prestigious hotel fashioned from a former TB sanatorium, is more than just the setting for this atmospheric debut mystery: the building’s history ultimately propels the plot. Elin Warner, an English police detective on extended leave, is somewhat fragile when she arrives at the hotel high in the Swiss Alps to celebrate the engagement of Elin’s older brother, Isaac, and Elin’s old friend Laure Strehl, a hotel staffer. Elin is dealing not only with the aftermath of a difficult case (about which more backstory would have been welcome), she also has a major unresolved issue with Isaac about the death of their younger brother, Sam, years earlier, as well as regret in letting her friendship with Laure wither. Then, as heavy snows lead to potential avalanches and the hotel is largely evacuated and totally isolated, bodies are discovered it’s clear that a killer is on the loose. With police unable to reach the hotel, Elin assumes the role of investigator, eventually putting herself at risk. Pearse not only creates believably fallible characters, she also vividly portrays the frigid landscape of Le Sommet buffeted by blizzards, and a chilling epilogue cries out for a sequel. After an accident, Hester is plucked from her life and placed into the world of the aristocratic Brock’s. It’s 1831 and we’re in the dingy backstreets of London, following Hester White, a young orphaned woman who has unfortunately fallen into the slums of the city from her original, better off position. ![]() Now? Now I don’t know what to think, because this book caught me by surprise. Well, that’s what I thought before I read this book. Historical fiction, with running themes of crime and mystery? Not for me.
